THE ARCHIPELAGO TRAIL IN 5 DAYS - Bike Tour

Sea and Bicycle

Archipelago Trail is a four day circular self-guided cycle tour across Turku Archipelago, one of the most popular cycling routes in Finland. The tour will take you through stunning archipelago sceneries. The islands are connected by numerous bridges and ferries. The peace and tranquility, particularly in the rugged outer islands, is a must if you want to experience Finland at its best. Most of the surfaces along the route are paved, making your ride comfortable. The profile varies from fairly flat to some rolling hills.

Day 1. Individual arrival in Nagu
Your tour begins at B&B Västergård on the island of Nagu (Nauvo in Finnish).  

Nagu is situated 50 km from Turku and can be easely accessed by car or public transportation. The travel time with from Turku is about 1,5 hours. If you travel from Helsinki there are hourly train and bus connections to Turku.

You are welcome to store extra luggage at Västergård during your cycling tour.

Day 2. Nagu – Naantali, 40 km
After a good night's sleep and breakfast at you will start your tour. Yopur first destination is Nagu village from where thet ferry Östern will take you to Rymättylä. The ferry ride takes about an hour and a half including a short stop at the island of Själö. Soon after you arrive at Rymättylä you can have a quick stop to climb up the restored WW2 air surveillance tower for a breathtaking view over the islands.

Your accommodation is at a modern holiday resort outside the city centre or at your choice on a traditonal farm.

Day 3. Naantali – Kustavi, 50 km
Your second day of cycling will take you via Velkua and Taivassalo to Kustavi. The first part covers some rolling hills, but you are in no hurry to the next ferry. The route will take you over some bridges with magnificent views. Your accomodation is by the sea side in a small boathouse with in-suite toilett, showers are in separate sauna building.

Day 4. Kustavi – Korpo, 42 km
Shortly after departing in the morning you will take the ferry to the remote island of Iniö. Enjoy the nature trail which offers scenic views over the island and take a short stop in the local village. A one hour ferry ride with m/s Antonia will take you further to the island of Houtskär. In Houtskär you may visit the village with a museum with traditional boats and the charming wooden church. Continue along the winding roads to the ferry to Korpo and your accommodation situated by the sea side. You are welcome to enjoy a Finnish sauna and a dip in the sea .

Day 5. Korpo – Nagu, 40 km
After breakfast you will cycle back to Korpo village and continue to the ferry to the island of Nagu. We recommend a stop at the main village in Nagu which with its lively marina serves as a centre for the whole archipelago. For the last nights accomodation and dinner we welcome you back to B&B Västergård.

Day 6. Individual departure from Nagu, or if you prefer stay one or two more days and relax at Västergård.

Archipelago Visit - Bike Tour

Connection boat Nagu-Hanka

This short two and a half day circular independent cycle tour starts from Turku. You will be visiting both small towns and the island villages connected by bridges and ferries. The roads are paved and partly there are separate cycle lanes. The route profile is relatively easy, but with some rolloing hills on second day.

Day 1.
Individual arrival to Turku. Accommodation in ***hotel in city centre. Explore Turku, the oldest city in Finland in the afternoon. You are welcome to store extra luggage at the hotel during your tour.

Day 2. Turku – Nagu (Nauvo in Finnish), 55 km
The first day of cycling will take you through the small archipelago towns of Kaarina and Pargas before arriving at the island of Nagu by ferry. Pargas offers great opportunitites for a detour if you want to explore castle ruins, museums or even a big open limestone mine. There will also be several idyllic cafées and handicraft shops. Your accomodation at Nagu will be in thev tiny but lively Nagu village or at B&B Västergård, in a converted barn in the country side.

Day 3. Nagu – Naantali, 35 km
After breakfast you will start by boarding, the morning or midday ferry over to Rymättylä. The ferry ride is about one hour. Soon after the ferry you can stop and climb up to the WW2 air surveillance tower for a view over the islands. Before reaching the busy Naantali you will pass Kultaranta, the summer residence of the president of Finland. Your accommodation is in Naantali city centre near the water front. In the evening you have time to explore the cosy wooden houses and restaurants along the shore line.

Day 4. Naantali – Turku, 15 km
The third day is only a short distance back to Turku. Individual departure from Turku, alternatively spend the day and an optional night in Turku.

MARIEHAMN TRAIL - Bike Tour

This six day, seven nights circular self guided tour passes through Turku and Åland Archipelagos. You will start from B&B Västergård on the island of Nagu (Nauvo in Finnish), alternatively from the city of Turku. You will ride through stunning archipelago sceneries. The peace and tranquillity, particulary in the rugged outer islands, is a unique experience. Along the route there are many interesting tourist attractions. Most of the roads surfaces are paved and the profile of the route is fairly flat. You are welcome to add extra nights at all stops for local biking or additional activities.

Day 1. Individual arrival to Nagu/ Turku
On the first day we welcome you to B&B Västergård on the island of Nagu (Nauvo in Finnish). Nagu is easely accessed by car or public transportation from Turku.

If you are starting from Turku accommodation is in a small ***hotel in Turku centre. From Turku you will start as day 7. In either case you are welcome to store extra luggage during your tour.

Day 2. Nagu - Kökar 35 km
After breakfast you start by cycling towards the small, but lively Nagu village. After a break continue along the winding gravel road towards the ferry to Korpo island. In the afternoon board the ferry to Kökar island, part of the semi-independent Aland islands.

Accommodation in a home stay (dinner included).

Day 3. Kökar - Föglö 20+ km
Continue your odysse of the small island communities. Visit the church of St. Anne, which was built in the site of the old monastery church and the ruins of the monastery. The next ferry will take to to the island of Föglö. Accommodation at B&B situated in the local museum. The rooms have shared toilets and showers.

Day 4. Föglö - Saltvik 45 / 55 km
Start in the morning with the ferry to the mainland of the Aland islands. Accommodation in a romantic guesthouse. If you have time, we suggest an extra night for relaxing or local cycling!

Day 5. Saltvik - Mariehamn 50 / 60 km
Today you will cycle along minor roads to Mariehamn, the capital of the semi-independet Aland islands. Accommodation in ***hotel in Marienhamn. An extra night here gives you more possibilities to get to know the town.

Day 6. Mariehamn - Turku
You have the morning for visiting the sights in Mariehamn before you will board the Viking Line cruising ship back to Turku. Accommodation in *** hotel in city centre.

Day 7. Turku - Nagu 60 km
The last cycling day will take you via pitoresque town of Naantali to Nagu where you will end your tour with dinner in the evening. You are welcome to stay an extra night in Nagu for cycling, kayaking or relaxing.

Day 8. Individual departure.

When you prefer it is alos possible to start fron Nagu and end your tour in Turku.

The Pensar Route 1 Day

Pensar Island, Pensar Syd

Route: Nauvo-Lenholm-Granvik-Pensar-Nauvo

The length of the route is about 45 km from Nagu village or 30 km if you start from Västergård. The ferry rides are totally about one hour.

The start is at latest 11:00 in the morning and you will be back around 7 o´clock in the afternoon. Lunch will be served at Pensar Syd restaurant.

Price from 75,00 €/ person including route description, bike with helmet and lunch. The bikes are collected and returned at the tourist information in Nagu village or at Västergård in Gyttja village. The bikes can be delivered to your accommodation in Nagu, Airisto or Sattmark for an extra fee according to a separate agreement.

The tour is self-guided.

The Pensar Trail can be turned into a two day relaxed tour by staying overnight and enjoying sauna and dinner at Pensar Syd. The price is from 175,00 €/ person (min. two persons). You can also stay one additional night at Västergård b&b, 50€/person.

Taste of Archipelago - Bike Tour

Restaurant & Cafe Köpmans

A full-day cycle tour that will give you a first taste of Turku Archipelago. The total cycling distance is 32 km and relatively easy. The tour is self-guided and you ride at your own speed.

Catch the morning bus, 9:30 from Turku bus station to the small city of Parainen. Pick up your bike and Route Guide from the local tourist information and you are on your way. After some 10 km stop at charming Sattmark coffee shop for a break. If the weather is warm you may want to take a dip in the sea or take a short walk along the trails in the woods. After your brake, continue towards the ferry to the island of Nagu. The ferry runs every 15 minutes and the crossing less than ten minutes.

Once on the island of Nagu you continue to the small but lively village. Drop off your bike at restaurant Köpmans in the village center. At restaurant Köpmans you will be served their famous pike burger.

Before the bus back to Turku departures at 16:55 (Saturday 15:55) you will have time for a stroll in the lively marina. You will be back in Turku around 18:10 pm.

Get to know the world of dog sled racing in its various forms and meet some of its heroes in the small village of Kirjais. The guide and owner of the dogs will tell you about the history, and how dog sledding has become a professional sport. Following the White-tailed Eagle in Archipelago National Park

Saving the white-tailed eagle is a success story of the Archipelago National Park. This great bird almost vanished in the 1970's with only 5-6 nesting couples but has increased to over 300 nestings this year thanks to protection work.

Survival Skills in the Archipelago Wilderness

Spend three days in the archipelago nature, learning about the flora and fauna, basic wilderness skills and traditional craftmaking, with the help of a nature guide. This is a programme for people who want an active stay in the archipelago, with plenty of fresh air guaranteed. In the three day programme, the first day is about getting to know the local flora and fauna by going out to explore the local forests and seashores. In order to survive in the wilderness it is important to know the basics about local species of plants and animals. On day two, you will learn skills that are useful in the wilderness, such as cooking with a camping stove, some first aid and orienteering. The third day will tell you more about the traditional crafts done in the archipelago, through coloring yarn using different plants found in the area and making crafts with ropes and knots. Critters and Plants – Introducing Archipelago Flora and Fauna

With the help of a guide, you can familiarize yourself with the archipelago environment by examining the typical plants and trees on the seashore and in forests as well as the tiny creatures that live there. In addition you will learn about the local ecosystem, environmental challenges for the archipelago and what can be done to overcome these challenges. By using the hands-on methods provided, this informative programme is far from a boring lecture and let's you become closer in touch with the nature of the archipelago. There is also a possibility to add an after-dark programme about bats and their behaviour which includes using a bat detector to find bats in their natural environment. One-Day Wilderness Course

If you wish to experience the true nature of the archipelago, the best way to do that is to spend time in the uninhabited areas and islands in the Archipelago National Park, sleeping under the stars or in a tent. However, in order to do so you need to be prepared. Learn how to use a camping stove to get a warm meal without the luxury of a kitchen or electricity. If you or your hiking friend gets hurt during your journey it is also good to know some first aid. Finding your way, with or without a compass is also a valuable skill. A wilderness guide will introduce you to these and other useful skills and nifty tricks through hands-on methods. Explore the Secretive Island of Örö

The fortress island of Örö has been a part of Finnish military history from the times of Russian tsars. Until 2015 the island was closed off from the public and only restricted entry was possible. Now the island has been added to the Archipelago National Park and was openened to travel and tourism. Örö has around 20 km of different hiking and nature trails. You can, for instance, walk along the "Pitkä ikävä" cobble stone road (trans. long yearning) built by Chinese war prisoners. The island hosts an array of rare plants and has the largest variety of butterflies in all of Finland, over 1600 different species.
In addition to the historically significant barracks area from Tsar times, the island has bunkers, cannons and trenches to explore. The hotel and restaurant are renovated in protected old buildings. You can rent kayaks and bicycles on the island. There is an exhibition that also tells about the nature and history of the island.
